The Advanced Composite Materials Engineering Group has access to a large assortment of equipment for manufacturing composite parts, testing materials under static and cyclic loads in controlled environments, producing test specimens and modifying testing facilities. Major components are:

Filament Winding Facility

This state-of-the-art facility is computer controlled with 4-axis, 1-spindel operation and defined tow tensioning which expedites the fabrication of high-quality tubular composite structures.

Curing Ovens

A large scale (H1.2 m x W1.2 m x L4.3 m) curing over, and various smaller ovens are available for the processing of samples. Thisequipment is computer controlled and optimized for polymer processing.

Multiaxial Testing Facilities

Two unique machines facilitate the monotonic and cyclic testing of composite specimens under combined axial tension/compression, torsion and internal/external pressure. Load capacities reach 10,000 psi internal pressure and 50,000 lbf axial force.

Prototype Testing Apparatus

This unique machine accommodates the combined axial tension/compression and internal pressure testing of large-scale structures. This machine has a capacity of 10,000 psi internal pressure and 235,000 lbf axial force.

Uniaxial Testing Equipment

Several devices are available for the study of basic material properties, fatigue life and endurance and crack behaviour under quasi-static and cyclic loads.
